Ushers Ministry
Why are Ushers important and why we need them?
First, an usher is a forerunner, often the first official representative of the church and Jesus Christ seen by people who enter God’s house. An usher has an obligation to help lead folks into readiness for learning, worshiping, and evangelism with his or her attitude in the foyer of the church.
Second, ushers sometimes may be the only one on one individual contact people experience before, during or after their attendance of a service. Ushers help people let down their guards, open their hearts, and relax their minds for the worship of God and direction of the Holy Spirit.
Third, the usher is the only person whose function cannot be replaced or omitted. Sometimes service parts are ommitted, and it is not unusual to have a service without a choir. But there is no substitute for the work of ushers in any church service or function regardless of its nature.
An Usher’s Prayer:
May we, lord, in church today, fulfill our assignment in a Christ like way. Make us efficient in what we do, effective in what we say, understanding by the way we feel about people, and helpful in the attitudes we have toward them. Make us coworkers with the pastor, the church musicians, the teachers and most of all, Lord, with you. Make people glad they came to our church today because the Holy Spirit ministered to their needs through the sermon and prayers of the pastor, through the music of the organist and singers, and through the ministry of ushers like us.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Old Testament scripture references on ushering can be found in Psalm 81:1, 4, 10; 2 Kings 22:4; 1 Chronicles9:19; and Ezekiel 40:45-46.
